This
course will focus on the related subject-matters of Fiqh
so as to show that it is an important discipline of Islamic
knowledge. Major topics to be covered are: Importance of
Fiqh in Islamic sciences and its relationship with other
disciplines, objectives of Islamic law, Development of Fiqh
in the time of the Prophet (s.a.w.), Development of Fiqh
in the time of companions (ashab), Development of Fiqh in
the time of the followers of companions (Tabi'un), the emergence
of major schools of Islamic law, stagnation period, modem
period and legal maxims.
The central place of akhlaq in Islam, as presented in the Qur'an and
Sunnah. Foundations of husn al-khuluq in the Qur'an and the Sunnah.
Moral philosophies developed by al-Ghazali. Akhlaq Islamiyyah as a

Early hadith books, particularly the six sahih (authentic) hadith
books. Mustalah al-hadith (study of hadith terminology). The
sciences of 'ilal al-hadith (vitiating causes of hadith), gharib al-
hadith (the obscurity in hadith), and mukhtalaf al-hadith
(hadith harmonization). Biographies of the following scholars
of hadith and their collections: Malik b. Anas, Ahmad b.
Hambal, Bukhari, Muslim, al-Haithami and al-Suyuti.
This course focuses on the approaches of Ibadat in systematic
and holistic manner and it also exposes to the student how to
live with 'Ibadat. Major topics to be covered are: The concept of
Ibadah in Islam, Philosophy and logic behind Ibadah in Islam,
Psychological and sociological impacts of Ibadat on individuals
and societies, al-Taharah (purification), Al-Salah (the prayer),
al-Zakah (the Almsgiving), Al-Sawm (The Fasting), al-Hajj (the
pilgrimage) and al-Jihad (the struggle for the establishment of
Islam).

glory of Andalusia under Muslim rule. Achievements and
weaknesses of the Abbasid period, including causes for the rise
and fall of Islamic Civilization.
Definition and theory of da'wah. The nature of man and
needs for da'wah. Islam as the religion of da'wah. Nature of
da'wah: freedom, rationality, and universalism. Da'wah as
practiced by the Prophet (s.a.w.) and Companions. The
spread of Islamic da'wah to Asia and Africa. The need for
correct da'wah methods in Contemporary Society, Da'wah to
non-Muslims in present-day multiracial and multireligious
societies. Da'wah to various Muslim target groups (e.g. elites,
masses, professionals, bureaucrats, private sectors, youth,
workers). Cooperation among da'wah organizations. Christian
missionary activities in Muslim countries.

taskhir in the Qur'an and Sunnah. Ethical and moral role of
man; attribute of 'ibad al-Rahman.

Study of Islamic legal foundations, namely, the Qur'an and
Sunnah. Legal connotations of words and sentences of the
Qur'an and hadith, such as al-amr and al-nahy, al-am and al-
khas, al-mujmal and al-mufassal, ah-haqiqah and al-
majaz and 'ilal al-ahkam. Utilization of usul al-fiqh in the
daily life of Muslims.
Surah al-Anfal: Jihad: Concepts, aims and objectives. Ethics
of jihad. Role of jihad in the early formation of the ummah.
Relationship of hijrah and jihad. The prophet (s.a.w) as a
military commander. Nature of the ghazawat of the Prophet
(s.a.w). Antecedents of the battle of Badr with a description of
the battle. Political, military and economic significance of the
Badr event. Its role in the spread of Islam. Anfal and khums:
meaning and significance. The above-mentioned themes are to

historical, theological, philosophical, sociological,
anthropological, psychological and phenomenological
approaches to other religions provided in the Qur'an, Sirah of
the Prophet (s.a.w), and works of Muslim theologians. Focus
on Judaism and Christianity & Hinduism with reference to
their own source materials.

definitive textual study of Kitab al-Ilm, Kitab al-Fitan,
Kitab al-Jihad and Kitab al-Munafiqin from Mukhtasar Sahih
Bukhari, Muslim and Kitabun Nikon from Meshkat al Masabih.
(b) study and memorization of the collection of 40 hadith
by Imam Nawawi.
Surah al-Nur. Social and political milieu at the time of the
revelation of the surah. Socio-ethical teachings contained in
the surah. The event of the ifk, its objectives, communication
ethics in the Qur'an. Importance of social injunctions contained
in the surah. Hudud, their legal and social significance. The
above-mentioned themes are to be examined on the basis of
the intensive study of the text of the surah with special
reference to the mufradat contained therein.

Status of Sunnah as a source of Shari'ah and a way of life;
refutation of allegations made in the past and present against it:
discussions of tendencies of contemporary approaches in the
study of sunnah and so as not to confuse students concerning

on anti-sunnah groups in different countries. Critical and
analytical methodology shall be used in teaching this course.

time of Al-Khulafa al-Rashidin and appreciate their

such as system of government, civil administration, economic
system, judiciary, military system, etc.
