IS 1101 Introduction to Islam

A general introduction to the worldview of Islam, its fundamental beliefs, doctrines, tenets and concepts; explanation concerning the meaning of Iman, Islam and Ihsan; relevance of Islam with modem age, Islam as a way of life (al-Din).

 
IS 1102 Islamic 'Aqidah

The definition and importance of 'aqidah in the life of Muslims. Definition of Tawhid, its various kinds. Tawhid in the religious history of mankind. The role of the Messengers of Allah in consolidating the 'aqidah of Tawhid. The prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.)'s message of Tawhid and its contrast with other concepts of God. Interrelationship of Iman, Islam and Ihsan. The articles of Faith: Unity of God, angels. Holy scriptures, Messengers, and Qadr and the Resurrection; significance of belief in them and their impact on human personality, culture and society.

IS 1103 Introduction to al-Qur'an

The Qur'an as Allah's final revelation and most authoritative source of Islamic teachings. A brief account of the main themes of Al-Qur'an, brief history of its compilation; the Qur'an as a complete guidance for mankind and the first source of Islamic Law; the correct approach to the study and understanding of al-Qur'an.

IS 1104 Introduction to Al-Sunnah

The place and importance of Al-Sunnah in Islam; the life of Muhammad (s.a.w) as a model for Muslims and mankind. A correct approach to the study and understanding of Sunnah. IS 1105 Introduction to Al-Shari'ah The meaning and scope of Shao'ah and its place in the life of a Muslim; sources of Islamic Shari'ah; important concepts and institutions, implementation of Shari'ah: Ways and Methodologies, Importance and Impact of Shari'ah on human life.

IS 1106 Introduction to Fiqh

This course will focus on the related subject-matters of Fiqh so as to show that it is an important discipline of Islamic knowledge. Major topics to be covered are: Importance of Fiqh in Islamic sciences and its relationship with other disciplines, objectives of Islamic law, Development of Fiqh in the time of the Prophet (s.a.w.), Development of Fiqh in the time of companions (ashab), Development of Fiqh in the time of the followers of companions (Tabi'un), the emergence of major schools of Islamic law, stagnation period, modem period and legal maxims.

IS 1207 Islamic Ethics

The central place of akhlaq in Islam, as presented in the Qur'an and Sunnah. Foundations of husn al-khuluq in the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Moral philosophies developed by al-Ghazali. Akhlaq Islamiyyah as a system of duties and adab to Allah, and His messengers, to fellow Muslims and non-Muslims and to other creatures of Allah.

IS 1208 Sciences of the Qur'an-I

Wahy, literally and technically. The Qur'an, its contents, major divisions of the Qur'an according to some famous Mufassirun (al- Razi, al-Shatibi, al-DihIavi, Abduh). Ultimate objectives of the Qur'an and Nuzul al-Qur'an. Asbab al-nuzul, importance of knowing the asbab. Collection and codification of the Qur'an during the period of Prophet (s.a.w.), Abu Bakr and 'Uthman. The Uthmani mushaf, naskh; meaning and significance, categories of naskh. Asalib al-Qur'an (Qur'anic style), mantuq and mafhum, 'am and khas, mujmal and mufassal, mutlaq and muqayyad. Eight categories of the Qur'anic words; according to khafa' and wuduh.
 

 
IS 1209 Sciences of the Qur'an-II

Amthal al-Qur'an. Al-Aqsam fi al-Qur'an. Tanasub al-suwar Wa-al-ayat. Mushkil al-Qur'an and Mutashabih. Translation of the al-Qur'an. Tafsir al-Qur'an, al-jadal fi al-Qur'an, I'jaz al- Qur'an.

IS 1210 Sciences of the Hadith-I

Meaning and authority of hadith. The Sunnah as the second source of Islam. Recording of al-hadith, Isnad system. The sources of tahammul and ada. The pre-requisites of a narrator of hadith. Classification of hadith in the light of acceptability and unacceptability. Fabrication of ahadith, its causes, and the means of elimination.

IS 1211 Sciences of the Hadith-II

Early hadith books, particularly the six sahih (authentic) hadith books. Mustalah al-hadith (study of hadith terminology). The sciences of 'ilal al-hadith (vitiating causes of hadith), gharib al- hadith (the obscurity in hadith), and mukhtalaf al-hadith (hadith harmonization). Biographies of the following scholars of hadith and their collections: Malik b. Anas, Ahmad b. Hambal, Bukhari, Muslim, al-Haithami and al-Suyuti.

IS 1212 Fiqh of 'Ibadat

This course focuses on the approaches of Ibadat in systematic and holistic manner and it also exposes to the student how to live with 'Ibadat. Major topics to be covered are: The concept of Ibadah in Islam, Philosophy and logic behind Ibadah in Islam, Psychological and sociological impacts of Ibadat on individuals and societies, al-Taharah (purification), Al-Salah (the prayer), al-Zakah (the Almsgiving), Al-Sawm (The Fasting), al-Hajj (the pilgrimage) and al-Jihad (the struggle for the establishment of Islam).
 
 

 
IS 2313 Biography of the Prophet (s.a.w)

Introduction to analytical study of the Sirah. Topics include realities in the Arab World and the world in general on the eve of al-Bi'thah; birth of the Prophet (s.a.w.) and his upbringing; Muhammad (s.a.w.) as the messenger of Allah, worshipper, servant of Allah, preacher and leader; lessons from the Hijrah; Isra' and Mi'raj; foundations for Islamic society; jihad in the Medina period; and hijjah al-Wada'. Also other important events throughout the life of the Prophet (s.a.w.).

IS 2314 Islamic Civilization

Definition and scope of Islamic Civilization. Religions and spiritual bases of Islamic Civilization reflected in the Madinah State. Islamic Civilization during the Umayyad period, including political, legal, administrative, economic, military, and educational systems; urban-life; architecture and fine arts. The glory of Andalusia under Muslim rule. Achievements and weaknesses of the Abbasid period, including causes for the rise and fall of Islamic Civilization.
 
IS 2315 Islamic Da'wah

Definition and theory of da'wah. The nature of man and needs for da'wah. Islam as the religion of da'wah. Nature of da'wah: freedom, rationality, and universalism. Da'wah as practiced by the Prophet (s.a.w.) and Companions. The spread of Islamic da'wah to Asia and Africa. The need for correct da'wah methods in Contemporary Society, Da'wah to non-Muslims in present-day multiracial and multireligious societies. Da'wah to various Muslim target groups (e.g. elites, masses, professionals, bureaucrats, private sectors, youth, workers). Cooperation among da'wah organizations. Christian missionary activities in Muslim countries.

IS 2316 Man in the Qur'an and Sunnah

Man as the central theme of the Qur'an: Spiritual and spatial dimensions of man. The essence and characteristics of man. Purpose of man's creation and the place of man in the universe. The continual message to children of Adam. The concepts of khilafah, ubudiyyah, 'adi, amanah, jihad and taskhir in the Qur'an and Sunnah. Ethical and moral role of man; attribute of 'ibad al-Rahman.

IIS 2317 Sciences of Islamic Jurisprudence

Study of Islamic legal foundations, namely, the Qur'an and Sunnah. Legal connotations of words and sentences of the Qur'an and hadith, such as al-amr and al-nahy, al-am and al- khas, al-mujmal and al-mufassal, ah-haqiqah and al- majaz and 'ilal al-ahkam. Utilization of usul al-fiqh in the daily life of Muslims.

IS 2418 Tafsir-I

Surah al-Anfal: Jihad: Concepts, aims and objectives. Ethics of jihad. Role of jihad in the early formation of the ummah. Relationship of hijrah and jihad. The prophet (s.a.w) as a military commander. Nature of the ghazawat of the Prophet (s.a.w). Antecedents of the battle of Badr with a description of the battle. Political, military and economic significance of the Badr event. Its role in the spread of Islam. Anfal and khums: meaning and significance. The above-mentioned themes are to be discussed on the basis of the textual study of surah al-Anfal with special reference to Quranic terminology of war.

IS 2419 Fiqh al-Mu'amalat wa al-Jinayat

(a) Mu'amalat: Guidance from the Qur'an and sunnah on such matters as trade and commerce, 'aqd al-bay' (contract of sale), sharikah and distribution of wealth,
(b) Jinayat: The philosophy of Islamic criminal law, its nature, scope and objectives. Classification of crimes in Islam, i.e. qisas, hudud and ta'zir. Scope of implementing Islamic criminal law, its problems and prospects, hudud and ta'zir. Scope of implementing Islamic criminal law, its problems and prospects. Codification and implementation of Islamic criminal law in some Muslim countries.

IS 2420 Islam and Contemporary Society

Nature and characteristics of contemporary secular society. Islamic approach towards society, humankind, social role of al-insan, principles of social ethics in Islam, family as a social institution, Islamic approach towards social welfare (takaful), modernism, technology and development. Islamic solution for the contemporary social crisis and Islamic global order.

IS 2421 Comparative Religion

Various definitions and methods of studying religion: historical, theological, philosophical, sociological, anthropological, psychological and phenomenological approaches to other religions provided in the Qur'an, Sirah of the Prophet (s.a.w), and works of Muslim theologians. Focus on Judaism and Christianity & Hinduism with reference to their own source materials.

IS 2422 Selected Hadith

(a) A definitive textual study of Kitab al-Ilm, Kitab al-Fitan, Kitab al-Jihad and Kitab al-Munafiqin from Mukhtasar Sahih Bukhari, Muslim and Kitabun Nikon from Meshkat al Masabih.
(b) study and memorization of the collection of 40 hadith by Imam Nawawi.
 
IS 3523 Tafsir-II

Surah al-Nur. Social and political milieu at the time of the revelation of the surah. Socio-ethical teachings contained in the surah. The event of the ifk, its objectives, communication ethics in the Qur'an. Importance of social injunctions contained in the surah. Hudud, their legal and social significance. The above-mentioned themes are to be examined on the basis of the intensive study of the text of the surah with special reference to the mufradat contained therein.

IS 3524 Studies in Sunnah

Status of Sunnah as a source of Shari'ah and a way of life; refutation of allegations made in the past and present against it: discussions of tendencies of contemporary approaches in the study of sunnah and so as not to confuse students concerning conflicting views that may be raised against sunnah. Emphasis on anti-sunnah groups in different countries. Critical and analytical methodology shall be used in teaching this course.

IS 3525 Fiqh of Personal Status and Inheritance

Topics of the course include foundations and boundaries of family in Islam, marriage and marital roles, dissolution of marriage and succession and inheritance.

IS 3526 Contemporary Islamic Thoughts

Selected developments in post-colonial Islamic thought on topics such as human rights, social justice, political power and responsibility, development and modernization, Islamization of knowledge and Muslim intellectual response to contemporary challenges.

IS 3527 History of Caliphates

The objective of this course is to familiarize students with the time of Al-Khulafa al-Rashidin and appreciate their achievements within the short period of time. Beside having general knowledge on biography of each Khalifah and major incidents in his time, the students will know some major institutions established and run by the al-Khulafa al-Rashidun such as system of government, civil administration, economic system, judiciary, military system, etc.

IS 3628 Islamic Law and Contemporary Society

This course is designed to make students aware of the position of Islamic law in the contemporary Muslim world and the attitude of the different segments of Muslim societies towards Islamic law and its application in contemporary context. Topics include: the place of Islamic law in the legal systems of Muslim countries, to reception of foreign laws in the Muslim world, contemporary development of Islamic legal thought and attempts of Muslim scholars to find possible solutions for present issues facing the Muslim Ummah.

IS 3629 Modem Muslim Thinkers

Critical appraisal of selected Muslim thinkers, such as al- Afghani, Muhammad 'Abduh, Sayyid Ahmad Khan, Ameer Ali and Iqbal. Badiuzzaman Sa'eed Nursi, Hassan al-Banna, Syed Abul A'la Maududi and Malik Ben Nabi.

IS 3630 Introduction to Islamic Philosophy

Discussion of the thought ofal-Kindi. Ikhwan al-Safa, al- Farabi, Ibn Sina, and Ibn Rushd, on such topics as the nature of Allah and His attributes, creation, good and evil, life after death and the day of resurrection.

IS 3631 Foundations for Political Science in the Qur'an and Sunnah


Introduction to Islamic concepts and views pertaining to the study of political science through a survey of relevant passages from the Qur'an and Sunnah and assessment of the historical contexts of those passages. Science, its meaning and method, relationship between science and religion, development of science and the influence of the philosophy of science, philosophy of science and civilization, Islamic approach to science, Islamic concept of man, life and knowledge; comparison with western concepts. Selected Qur'anic verses on sciences. Muslim scientists and their contributions.
IS 4734 International Institutions

This course is designed to provide with necessary knowledge about the major political, social, economic, educational and cultural international institutions. Among the International institutions to be discussed are United Nations Organizations (UNO), Organization of Islamic Conference (QIC), World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), Islamic Development Bank (IDB), ICDT, ICTVTR, Ankara Center, Asian Development Bank etc.
IS 4735 Islam in Contemporary South-Asia (SAARC Countries)

Comparative study of political and socio-economic dimensions of Islam in South-Asia with emphasis on Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Maldives and Sri Lanka.
IS 4736 Islam and Contemporary Ideologies and Movements

The course aims at examining the Islamic views of life; its concept of success (al-Falah) and failure (al-Khusran); critical survey on various ideologies and movements, their characteristics and challenges such as capitalism, secularism, rationalism, Marxism, socialism, nationalism, racism and feminism.
IS 4737 Studies in Tafsir and the Methodology of Some Eminent Musfassimn

Tafsir during the period of the Prophet (s.a.w), the sahabah, the tabi'un and tabi'tabi'in. Tafsir bi al-ma'thur, methodology and characteristics, e.g. al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir. Tafsir bi al-ray: methodology and characteristics, e.g. Fakhruddin al-Razi and al-Alusi, al-Tafsir al-balaghi (al- Kalami); methodology and characteristics, e.g. al- Zamakhshari, Abu al-Sa'ud. IS 4738 Principles of Living with Sunnah

Obligation of adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet (s.a.w.) in all spheres of life. Highlights on the duty of Muslims towards Sunnah. Giving the right approach and essential principles towards better understanding of Sunnah its application according to the analytical methodology. Relating Sunnah texts and its objectives with contemporary life.

IS 4739 Comparative Jurisprudence

The significance of al-fiqh al-muqaran in the study of fiqh. Reasons for al-ikhtilaf (differences of opinion among fuqaha). The emergence and characteristics of various schools of fiqh, such as Miliki, Hanafi, shafi'i, Hanbali and Ja'fari. Selected topics based on different fiqh texts.
IS 4840 Muslim Contribution to World Culture

The course deals with a survey of Muslim contributions to the world cultures and civilizations in the fields of the human and natural sciences: calligraphy and visual arts, architecture and environmental sciences, mathematics and engineering science, astronomy, physics, chemistry, ophthalmology, arts and literature, a comparative study of value systems, interaction between Islamic culture and Western culture.
IS 4841 Readings in Kalam

Definitions, origins and development of 'ilm al-kalam, bid'ah, khurafah and such deviant teaching as al- Batiniyyah, al-Qadianiyyah, and al-Bahiyyah. Theological controversies, such as dhat Allah, sifat Allah, khalq al-afal, al-adalah al-ilahiyyah and ismat al-imam. Analysis of the main difference between Ahl al-Sunnah, Mulazilah, Ashairah, Qadariah, Jabariyah, and Shi'aites.
 


IS 4842 History of Islamic Renaissance

Revival and reform in the 18th Century. European domination and Islamic responses. The resurgence of Islam. Main features of change. Problems of Muslim secular regimes. Case studies of Sanusiyyah in North Africa, the Mahdiyyah in Sudan, Uthman Dan Fodio in Nigeria, the jihad movement of Shah Ismail and Syed Ahmad in India, Hasan al-Banna in Egypt and Abul A'la al-Maududi in Pakistan.
IS 4843 Islamic Mystical Philosophy

Qur'anic foundations of tasawwuf; development of tasawwufand its influence on philosophical discourse. A historical analysis of the development of mysticism and tasawwuf in Indian sub continent.
IS 4844 Readings in 'Aqidah

The course aims at penetrating inquiry into the place of reason ('aql) in the revelation framework of Islam: Study of relevant literature dealing with theoretical formulation of 'aqidah as developed by leading thinkers like Al-Nasifi, Al- Tahawi, al-Ghazali and the impact of 'aqidah on life and its relation to social, economic, legal, educational and political systems.
