| ENG 1105 Introduction to Literature |
This course is designed for the freshman to study B.A. Honors in English. With this course they will familiarize themselves with various aspects of literary terms. It will also introduce various elements of English Literature.
| ENG 1107 Introduction to Poetry |
This course is intended to give an introduction
to English poetry. It covers some well-known poems of famous
poets from different literary Movements and Ages.
| ENG 1208 Fictional and Non-Fictional Prose |
Students will study novels for the first time. In this course, the salient features of novels would be introduced.
| ENG 1209 Elizabethan and 17th Century Poetry |
John Milton and Edmund
Spenser are considered to be the best literary figures of
17th century poetry. This course will emphasize Milton’s
style, presentation as well as biblical references. Religious
influences on the literary works are reflected in Spenser’s
works. Moral and intellectual responsibilities of the Writers
receive a special attention in this course.
| ENG 1210 Elementary Linguistics |
The course
aims at giving the students knowledge of the basic working
of mixed economy at the aggregate level. This will take
into account the critical view of Islam on some aspects
of conventional discussion which are inconsistent with Islamic
ethico-legal principles. Topics to be covered include basic
concepts in macroeconomics, measurement of national income
and output, inflation and unemployment, fiscal policy, monetary
policy, commercial and central banking, working of commodity
and money markets, stabilization policy, international trade.

1311 Introduction to Drama |
Ancient classical Greek Drama is introduced in this course which encompasses one of the oldest writers i.e. Sophocles to the modern playwright. G.B. Shaw. The course will certainly focus on the different literary works of different ages to draw a better picture of gradual development of English drama.

Two epics and three plays of ancient times have been included in this course in order to give learners a taste of the best.
| ENG 1313 History of the English Language |
This
course aims at an understanding of origin and development
of the English language and making students familiar with
the salient features of Old, Middle and Modern English.
Its aim is to make students acquainted with the global distribution
of English in terms of ENL, ESL and EFL territories and
promotes among them a sense of identity, continuity of different
regional and non-native varieties of English such as South
Asian And African varieties.

This course covers the development of drama and prose in English literature. Students will enjoy the works of William Congreve, John Bunyan and John Dryden in this course.

This course introduces learners to different tenets and schools of Linguistic thoughts. It aims at an understanding of the main line development of the subject. Topics include Study of language : Philology and Linguistics; American Structural Linguistics: Bloomfied: mentalism and behavioursim; European structuralism: Fardinand de Saussue: sign, signified and signifier; la langage, la langue, la parole; synchrony and diachrony; syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations; Noam Chomsky: Transformational Generative Grammar; Prague school: Functional sentence perspective.

2116 Advanced Grammar (Approaches to Grammar) |
This course gives an
account of various beliefs and attitudes that people hold
about grammar by exploring the subject from its origin through
different tenets and traditions. It gives an account of
what was involved in traditional grammar, and investigates
some of the leading shibboleths of prescriptive grammar.
This leads to a consideration of modern trends, and of the
differences between ancient and modern approaches to grammar.

story |
This courses introduces short stories and essays. The moral responsibilities of the writers and their view of life are presented here. Each writer has a different style which will enrich the minds of the students.
This course covers the study of English History from the Anglo-saxon period to the 20th Century literature. It deals strictly with different literary movements and age of English History.

This course attempts
at a survey of different approaches and methods of language
teaching with special reference to communicative approach
to language teaching, and aims at making students enable
of developing an appropriate methodology for their own ELT/L
situations.
| ID 1105 Basics of Economics |
Principles of effective
product innovations and management. Major emphasis on product
concepts and tools relevant to product management, development
of meaningful criteria for decision making in product areas,
new product development and processes, management of existing
products, and organizational considerations.
This course will start
with an introduction to the legal system of Bangladesh.
Topics to be covered include law of contract & law of
partnership, company law.
| ENG 2321 Problems and Prospects of ELT in Bangladesh |
The aim of this course
is to provide an overview of ELT in Bangladesh - its past
and present states. it explores different issues of ELT
in Bangladesh- syllabus, curriculum, textbooks, teacher
education, methodology and evaluation. It also explores
different ELT projects such as ELTIP and American Peach
Corps initiativefor the improvement of English language
teaching and learning in Bangladesh.
| ENG 2322 Metaphysical Poetry |
The wit and religious
elements in metaphysical poetry are the dominant features
of this course. The religious tension within the mind is
revealed here. Thelove of God and love of human beings are
intertwined in these writers. A comprehensive picture would
be drawn in this course.
| ENG 3123 Socio Linguistics |
This course aims to
introduce students to the social factors that govern language
learning. It explores specific sociolinguistic topics of
relevance to language education; these include literacy,
language attitudes, language contact situations, social
and linguistic nature of dialects, language variation, language
changeandsecond language learning in different regions.
| ENG 3124 Psycho Linguistics |
The course aims at introducing
the students to the psychological factors that govern language
learning. It includes psycholinguistic theories of language
learning from cognitive point of view with specific focus
on the psychology of language learning. Furthermore, the
paper will explore the implications of boththese areas for
second/foreign language learning and teaching.
This course includes
western thought from the Ancient Greeks and Romans to Darwin
and Modern Analytical philosophy and Existentialism. Plato,
Aristotle,Stories, to modern Philosophy, Romanticism, French
Revolution, Darwin, Nietsche, Feminism, Pragmatism, Analytical
Philosophy and Existentialism.
| ENG 3226 Teaching Grammar & Usage |
This course aims at
a systematic presentation of various areas of English grammar
and usage from pedagogic point of view. First, it defines
grammar and its place and role in language teaching ; it
then draws an essential distinction between 'knowing grammar'
and 'knowing about grammar' and explores different techniques
and strategies of teaching grammar. This leads to an account
of the main aspects of grammar, Second, it introduces usage
as the way in which the elements of language produce meaning:
this includes accent, pronunciation, spelling, punctuation,
words and idioms. It also raises certain issues of usage
controversies, usage guidance and usage criticism: topics
include social and cultural factors in usage; correctness,
rules and convention; formal, informal and standard usage;
British and American usage; usage and authority.
| ENG 3227 18th Century Eng. Literature |
This period is called
neo-classical age. The objective is to introduce 18th century
poetry and prose. The special feature of the poetry of this
period is the use of poetic diction as well as satire in
prose and poetry.
| ENG 3228 Non-Fictional Prose (Essays) |
The objective of this
course is to introduce essays and prose writings of different
ages. The students will be familiar with standard English
prose of the 18th century which was regarded by Mr. Arnold
as the classical period in English prose.
| ENG 1106 English Phonetics and Phonology |
This course introduces
students to two aspects: first, phonetics, the study of
speech sounds (It has three branches viz. i) Articulatory
Phonetics, the study of sounds as they are made or pronounced,
ii) Acoustic Phonetics, the study of sound as they are heard,
and iii) Experimental Phonetics, which involves the manipulation
of waveforms and makes psycho-acoustic tests to identify
aspects that are essential for understanding and recognition
of linguistic categories) and second, English phonology,
the study of sound patterns of English language.
| ENG 3329 The Study of Semantics |
This course aims to
the study of meaning: different types of meaning and different
approaches to the study of meaning. It studies different
aspects of meaning both within language and in relation
between language and the world.
| ENG 3330 Syllabus Designing & Material Production |
This course, on the first hand, will examine the assumptions underlying syllabus design by looking at fundamental considerations of curriculum development such as language policy, needs analysis, setting goals and defining objectives, deciding about the pedagogic approach, specification of 'how' and 'what' of a language syllabus, selection and grading of items and tasks, and development of testing scheme and evaluation policy. It examines types of syllabus and the elements of an appropriate second/foreign language course syllabus in Bangladesh situation. Students will be able to develop their own sample syllabus and examine its rationale. On the second, this course will look at how to assess the relevance of existing teaching materials to one's teaching situation. It will help students develop materials of their own. It is concerned with the principles of material evaluation development, adaptation, supplementation and production.

The objective of this course is to familiarize with romantic tradition and various aspects of the age, suggestiveness, longing for the past and the ideal, the spirit of adventure and love of nature are reflected in the poetry of the age.

Analysis, design, and implementation
of information systems for organizations. Major emphasis
on tasks involved in system analysis and design and on the
relationship between designers and users of a system. It
includes systems development methodology, the nature of
systems development, and tools for system analysis.
| ENG 4133 19th Century Literature |
Victorian age is an
age of scientific development, loss of faith and age of
religious conflict. All these are dealt with in the poetry
of the period. The students will love to read the poetry
of Tennyson, Browning and Matthew Arnold.

The aim is to introduce modern American Fiction and Drama.
| ENG 4235 Language Testing & Evaluation |
This course introduces students to the aspects of testing and evaluation as a means to measure learning and teaching, which has taken place over a period of time. It also introduces different purposes of test- placement, progress and attainment, different forms of test items and evaluation tools and explores the reliability and validity of test items.

Victorian age is an age of novels Objective of this course is to familiarize the students with a vast range of novels in the Victorian age. Thomas Hardy, Charles Dickens & Emile Bronte are the prominent figures.

The objective is to open a new horizon of Modern Poetry and Drama to the students.

4238 Elizabethan & Jacobean Drama |
The purpose is to study the dramas of English literature called as the literature of the Renaissance period in English.
| ENG 4339 ELT Research Project |
This module will look at the importance of looking at language education with an enquiring mind. It will introduce students to research methods and format of writing empirical research paper and will discuss the major tools of eliciting and analyzing data. It will also provide students the practicum (hands-on practice) to bridge theory and practice. Research will be carried out in both quantitative and ethnographic manner. Students will prepare and submit a dissertation on any of the issues of ELT in Bangladesh.

This course will give
knowledge of how great a playwright Shakespeare is. His
two comedies and three great tragedies are included in this
course.

This course is designed to give an introduction to the new approach, theme and style of modern writing, particularly in English Fiction. Some noted Novelists like James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence and William Golding are included in this course.

This course covers a vast area of literary, criticism from 10th to 20th Century. This course will prepare the students for critical appreciation of any work of literature.
